Institute of Export Event Sept 2011

IOE NW Branch Quarterly Event

Ferranti Technologies Ltd, Cairo House, Oldham

27th September 2011

The Institute's NW Branch held another successful Quarterly Event on the 27th September, generously sponsored and hosted by Ferranti Technologies Ltd at their impressively redeveloped offices at Cairo House, Oldham. We were please to welcome the IOE's Director General, Lesley Batchelor and the newly appointed Director of Education, Kevin Shakespeare amongst our many guests.  The programme was opened by Steven Warren, Managing Director of Ferranti Technologies who gave an overview of the company and an insight into the company's international marketing challenges. He explained that a significant feature of his multi-million international business was that Ferranti outsourced his shipping department to IOE's close associates Strong & Herd LLP so that they themselves could focus their own human resources on development, production and sales.

For those of the forty plus guests who did not already know about the dangers of violating the Bribery Act, Emma Flower of Pinsent Mason LLP soon made it quite clear what penalties to expect when caught. From what she explained, it appeared very easy to run foul of the law individually and corporately unless a company had in place, and acted upon, a clear policy and well publicised avoidance procedures.

Sandra Strong, Managing Partner of Strong & Herd LLP, an active member of the NW Branch Committee and IOE Council, explained the changes that are taking place in respect of HMRC's CHIEF technology and its impact on importers, exporters and forwarding agents. This was supplemented by HMRC's John Griffiths who explained when and where HMRC were running dedicated training programmes around the country.

Following an excellent buffet and networking session, Gabriela Castro-Fontoura, director of Sunny Sky Solutions explained how you needed to go beyond blue sky thinking when it came to establishing a foothold in South America. Whilst being a rapidly developing region with increasing needs for imports, she explained that it cannot be treated as one market, nor as a region that spoke the European forms of Spanish or Portuguese. The level of economic development in each country, and within regions of each country, were so different that only the closest and most careful market research was appropriate before committing serious resources.

Lesley Batchelor FIEx, IOE's DG, took the opportunity of the visit to remind everybody of the value of IOE membership to a career in international trade, and of the range an educational, training and apprenticeship programmes available through the IOE. She encouraged everybody to check the IOE website for details.

She then proceeded to award NW Branch committee member John Feerick MIEx with an IOE Fellowship for services rendered to exports sales throughout his career and latterly as IOE Director of Education and IOE NW Branch committee member.  An IOE Fellowship is the highest honour that can be bestowed on a member.  The unexpected honour left him somewhat surprised and speechless.

Sandra Strong MIEx (Grad) CITA, on the other hand, successfully maintained her composure when she too was awarded an IOE Fellowship for her work with the IOE and other international trade related organisations, and for services to export/import education, training, and CPD, all this concurrent with a continuing distinguished career in the international trade and customs environment.

On a less formal note, the usual fun quiz took place (for an example click here) plus  a business card draw and raffle.  The prizes were a choice of a free 12 months Membership of the Institute of Export & International Trade, a place on a one day Strong & Herd LLP  training course held in Manchester or a Incoterms book and chart plus a personal prize of a bottle of wine for the winners of the raffle.  The instant feedback from attendees was highly complimentary of the content, organisation, buffet and facilities.  The Event was hosted by NW Branch Chairman Brian Herd MIEx who thanked the sponsors and the organising team for their generosity and efforts.

The next Quarterly Event is being hosted and sponsored by The University of Liverpool Management School, Liverpool, England on 23rd November 2011. Places can be booked by email to: Anthony Pierce - IOE NW Branch Secretary:  click to email
