USA security scanning of shipping containers

Date added: 23/03/2010

There is news that the USA is to postpone its plans to introduce compulsory scanning of all US-bound shipping containers before they leave foreign ports. As originally drafted, the legislation would have required all containers bound for the USA to be scanned at the port of origin. Full implementation of this was to be on or before the 1 July 2012. At a recent meeting of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) it was said that an extension to the implementation date was being considered, which probably means something like a 2year delay on full implementation. This has been greeted with widespread relief by trade and transport organisations in the EU.
