World Trade Statistics 2013

Posted on: 13/11/2013

In October 2013 the World Trade Organisation (WTO) published the world trade figures for the year 2012.  It showed a rise in the value of international trade both for merchandise and services.  This new data allows the exact contribution of each country to international trade to be measured more precisely. The new chapter draws on the collaborative work of the WTO and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and in particular on the new OECD-WTO database on trade in value-added terms, which was launched earlier this year. The new data provides new perspectives on the role of trade in intermediate goods and services and recalculates bilateral trade balances according to the domestic content of each country’s exports

The Director General of the WTO, Roberto Azevedo, said in his introduction: Policy makers depend on reliable statistics so that they can base their analysis on facts. This is just as true for trade policy as it is for other areas of policy-making.
