UK exports rose in February

Posted on: 11/04/2019

UK exports of goods rose in February to record a small growth of 2.4% in the first two months of the year to £58 billion.

But the figure hides a fall in exports to non-EU countries of just under one percent, that was offset by a rise of 5.75% in sales to the EU27. For the second month running, the Uk sold more to EU countries than to the rest of the world.

There is growing concern that the modest rise in exports was only achieved due to customers stockpiling in advance of Brexit, and that the true picture may be that exports are declining. The latest figures were affected by a very sharp fall in exports of gold to Switzerland and Turkey. The erratic nature of this particular item makes it difficult to produce a clear comparison.
